The City Plan and Enterprising Teachers

Hull faces some big issues and challenges – but now has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to regain its status as a dynamic and thriving European port-city.

The developing City Plan is about tackling these issues and seizing this opportunity. It’s about bringing the whole of Hull together to set out -

• a clear goal and ambitions for the city over the next 10 years

• what needs to happen, when it will be delivered and who’s involved

• how the lives and opportunities of local people will be improved as the plan is delivered

• what it will mean for the city as a whole and wider region

Therefore it has set up a group for education practitioners across Hull who want to ‘Be Enterprising’, to come together and share their fantastic ideas – inspiring our future generations and helping to embed the Big 13 Enterprise skills into all our young people’s lives and is supported by the Regeneration and Partnerships Team of Hull City Council. It is Chaired by Stephen Logan Assistant Headteacher of Malet Lambert School.

A key focus of this group is the promotion of The Big 13 - 13 enterprise entitlements devised to cover the spectrum of entrepreneurial skills through the curriculum that were developed with partners in Rotherham. The Big 13 are a range of enterprise skills and capabilities that are utilised during, and the outcome of, good quality enterprise learning. They were devised through the award winning enterprise education programme, Rotherham Ready, which now operates nationally as a not-for-profit social enterprise Ready Unlimited. A key part of the Ready Unlimited approach is to make learning about and applying enterprise capabilities part of children’s enterprise learning entitlement.

Hull - Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013

Hull City Council in partnership with Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership has organised a series of events, which will take place from 18 – 22 November 2013 to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. Hull is putting its weight behind Global Entrepreneurship week a campaign run by the Kauffman Foundation and Youth Business International in order to show how enterprising its young people are. Every day in the UK people talk about making a change in their life and consider starting up a business. By connecting individuals to practical support and those who have done it already, Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013 will help turn these exchanges into the businesses of tomorrow. Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world's largest celebration of innovation and enterprise, active in 150 countries across the world. Global Entrepreneurship Week inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators.

Although Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013 has a grand sounding name, the reality of the week is that it's all about the small things, and as the small acorn develops into a mighty oak, so it hopes that the ideas and activities put on during the week for many young people in Hull will one day take root and go on to become something much bigger.

The week in Hull is sponsored by a number of small and large private, public and charitable organisations including Malet Lambert School, St. Stephens, Spencer Group, Hull Training, KC, Mail News & Media, The Co-operative, Sangwin Group, Cityworks UK, Jelf Insurance Partnership, Hull College and British Land and the week as a whole by Hull City Council.

Blair Jacobs Chair Hull Youth enterprise partnership, said:

"Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull is always a huge success, and this year sees the tenth year has attracted over 50 organisations to support our enterprising young people.

"We believe that not everyone will become an entrepreneur, but everyone needs to be enterprising and you should start at a very young age, so this year there are two events dedicated to Hull's primary school pupils."

Chief Executive of Youth Business International, Andrew Devenport said:

"There is a great need to provide opportunities today that help entrepreneurs pursue their dreams and build the businesses of tomorrow. Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013 is kick starting the conversations that are needed to make this happen. We are pleased that as a City Hull gives its full support to the campaign to enable its young people to celebrate "

“We hope this sets an aspirational agenda for today's young people in Hull and the Humber sub-region to set up their own businesses, start social enterprises to improve their communities and be innovative employees themselves."

Loui Fowler - last day of work experience

On the last day of my Work Experience, I wanted to complete some of my own business work to be ahead and also start preparing for the holidays, but before this Mike had prepared a check list for me to complete. Which was to: finish off my letter to send to Hull FC, to choose 3 possible Icebreakers for GEW, finish off my blog, finish off my letter to send to all the Super League clubs, finish the project with Lee and finally send the final GEW Banner designs for Charles approval. I had quite a busy morning ahead of me, so I started it by finishing off the GEW designs for their own TRIPLE R Banner and sent them off to Charles. Then I began on my tick list of finishing off the two letters; which I also accomplished. I then was to finish my blog and make a start on the GEW Icebreakers. Half way through my Icebreaker document, Jon and Jamie (the owners of Yes Yes) was here for a meeting and Mike insisted I came along. The meeting for me was really good, as I’ve now got some great new ideas from Jon and Jamie but also they wanted to finish off my website, and make me a landline number for my business not only to make it look bigger, but also attracts more companies. So personally, I found the meeting very beneficial, and are looking forward for the meeting with Jon and Jamie and hopefully working with Yes Yes in the future. The meeting finish at roughly 1:15, so I quickly nipped out for my lunch to get back in time to finish of the last little bits Lee and I had to do for the GEW event. Unfortunately we didnt achieve what we wanted to on the last day but overall I believe we did pretty well for a week’s worth of work, and hopefully enough to give the GEW event a little more money. So after it all I went to back to the office, collected my belongings and ended a great week of Work Experience.

Monday 15 July 2013

Day 4 Loui's Work Experience with Youth Enterprise

Day 4:- When arriving into the office the first thing I had to do was to start this Blog about what I’ve done over the week of my work experience. So I started with it so it could be published before 10 o’clock. At 9 Charles got me to go across to the Guildhall to go see his friend Mitch Upfold as he was going to get me some boxing tickets for Luke Campbell’s fight on the Saturday. So we went off to go see him to receive the tickets ( which I was grateful for), then we went to find one of Charles friends called Nathan Turner as had a very humorous and true conversation talking about my business and general things. Then as soon as we came back I was sent by Mike, to go deliver a cheque to Hullabaloon, which wasn’t very far just down the road. So when I got back I had to just finish off any of my own projects, which are the GEW banner design, My letter to Adam Pearson which all needed to be done and look for the Icebreakers for the GEW events. After I did this Lee turned up again to finish off any other sponsor money that we needed to collect as well as the raffle prizes which we were again very successful in as we received a Chinese Laundry T-shirt form Chinese Laundry, and we also received a £25 Lush beauty set for the bath to. We also started talking to the manager at Famous Memorabilia who was very willing to donate as he said that Enterprise is very close to his heart. So he said he would be willing to donate.

Loui Fowler - Work Experience Blog

Day 1 - When entering Kingston house I signed in and the came up to the Youth Enterprise office where I was greeted by Mike and Charles. After that I was shown around by Mike who showed me all of the fire exits and told me what precautions I had to take. When returning back to the office Charles had lined me up to attend a meeting with different sections of the Council and discussed the LEP and scrutiny which overall I found very boring and pointless. For me, I believed the meeting was not interesting but good for the experience. The meeting was very sophisticated and really I didn’t understand much of it. Subsequently, I went out for dinner and when I returned Lee Pearson from Malet was there who was attending to discuss a task that Mike had allowed Lee and I to do. The task was to try and earn more money for the GEW event in November. On that day Lee and I decided that the most efficient thing to do was to just go out onto the town streets and generally ask small businesses if they would like to sponsor any prises for the kids in GEW. On that day we wasn’t as successful as we wanted to be however, we did have many people interested, therefore we would follow this up on the following days.

Day 2 - On the second day I came in late due to having to attend a Vivergo Fuels meeting at the Saltend Chemical Park. Two other students and I were attending on behalf of Malet Lambert Students. When we get there we were met be Esther who told us what we were doing. We were handing out safety leaflets to the people getting onto the coach to travel up to the Vivergo fuels tent who were given a brief of what’s happening and how and where their money is going. After handing out the leaflets we travelled up to the tent and listened to the pitches and interviews that they had to offer. Personally I found it quite interesting but then started to bore me. The best thing was I actually understood what they were talking about due to the renewable energy project we did at school. After that I went to the Youth Enterprise office again where Mike has already had some tasks aligned up for me. The first one was to research another game / Icebreaker for the GEW events in November. I did think of some creative games however not all of them were suitable to play around a table. So we came up with the most creative and unusual games and just before the event in November I will be pitching them to the GEW organisers. After this I went to dinner and then was put up to another big task which was to clean up the store cupboard. That took me the rest of the afternoon in which I had been crushing boxes and also moving them so there was more space for more brochures.

Day 3 – On the third day I was set 1 task but then told that if I had some work for my business that I needed to be getting on with I should. The only task of the day must have been one of the worst as I had to clean 30 mugs for the Women’s Enterprise Meeting. It wasn’t bad that I had to wash the mugs; it was that in some of the mugs because they had been left so long there was mould on them. It was disgusting but my suspicion was that they all belonged to one person. Charles! So I got on with my tasks so they would be ready for the women to use at the meeting. I started at 9 and finished at 9:45. I actually took my time and tried not to think about the mould and finished 15 minutes before the meeting, which I was very pleased about. After that I got on with my business work and got on with the GEW designs, the Wigan Warriors designs and finally the Leeds Rhinos designs. From this for the GEW design as there was so many different colours I had to simple it down so they price would be less. So I tweaked the logo and tried to find out a price for them. Afterward, I went for dinner and arrived back just before Lee who was again helping me raise some more money for the GEW event. So we set off back the Brooks the shop that had told us to return when the manager had come back; so we did. Lee and I talked to the manager who was more than pleased to give something for the even so we received a £20 gift voucher for the Malet event. We was off to a god start. Then after being refused several times we thought we would go to Mad Dog Music who said they would give £20 for the event too. This is looking very good for the GEW event but even better we then went to The Uniform Shop who wanted to give the event £200 which Lee and I was very pleased with, and that was our day.

“I was really pleased to win the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge 2012 with my idea of a retractable sports banner, it has encouraged me to take my idea further and I now have had my sports banners designed and manufactured in China. I have since held meetings with Hull FC who agreed to purchase some of the banners for sale in the official club shop and I have sold a number of them at matches. I am in the process of marketing the concept to other professional clubs as well as looking at developing one for school pupils, there is no doubt without the support of Ruth I would not have got as far as I have with my business idea”

It made me incredibly proud to be from a city that supports entrepreneurial spirit so well, we’ve just got to remember to shout about it.”

Laura-Jane Rawlings

“I was inspired by the number of schools and businesses that have come together in Hull to support the City’s young people. Hull seems to really understand the need to invest in its youth generation; as the future labour market, entrepreneurs, consumers and residents young people are essential to the long term success of the City and the Hull business community gets that. The opportunities for young people in Hull are exceptional and I am confident that the students who benefit from these experiences will be very well prepared for their futures post education.”

Jackie Frost

“It was truly inspirational to see and hear about the work of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, John Cracknell Youth Bank, Hull Ready & Make £5 Blossom, and to witness the business commitment and engagement that there was in the room. It was wonderful to listen to the students from Malet Lambert School talking about their enterprise learning and experiences. Congratulations to you all on holding such a great event, and I look forward to working in partnership with you for many years to come.”

Mike Notarantonio

“The whole Youth Enterprise Summit, from start to finish, had a thoroughly professional feel to the whole event and fitted perfectly into Business Week. It was good to see the business delegates and so many young people attending an event on an equal platform and the presentations from all the speakers showed a real enthusiasm and passion for enterprise, it was great to hear the young people telling their stories of running businesses whilst still at school and the support they have had from their school, teachers and Hull Youth Enterprise.

The launch of the Hull Start Up book, the Hull Youth Enterprise Bank Patron scheme and the Global Entrepreneurship Week brochure also showcased the kind of support and opportunities that is available to the young people of our City and it was fantastic to see so many people there to support the event.”

Jane Disbrey
Headteacher Malet Lambert School
“Particularly in challenging times students need the chance to see what is possible for their future. They need to be given challenge, respect and hope. The more we invest in our children the brighter the future for all of us. Our students rightfully expect and demand the best possible opportunities to empower them in life. Experience gained through the Youth Enterprise Summit is an essential component in their journey to successful , productive adulthood. We are proud to support and participate in this event and look forward to next year.”

Nick Sangwin
Managing Director
Sangwin Group of Companies
“Thank you for inviting me to the Youth Enterprise Summit, it was a fantastic showpiece event for the area and proves how we can achieve success with the students, teachers and the business community all working together. It makes me feel very proud that Hull is leading the country in this and we are already seeing the fruits of it with successful companies being set up and Global Entrepreneurship Week will no doubt continue this trend.

I was impressed by the professionalism of the young speakers standing up on the stage in a room full of strange faces and how they stuck to the task of telling us their story and the journeys they had embarked on. It was an excellent event and certainly appropriate to have it as part of the Business Week diary.”

Kate Brennan
Act the Facts, the educational script writing company
"Young people were in the driving seat at the Youth Enterprise Summit 2013, from the confident school students directing delegates through the venue to the youthful entrepreneurs, previous beneficiaries of YE funding and now running successful businesses; it was time for the older members of the business community to see what youth and energy has achieved in the Hull area.

Ten years of Global Entrepreneurship Week has created a ‘can-do’ environment in Hull, where young people are given support, encouragement and financial backing to turn their bright ideas into viable enterprises. There can’t be many other places investing this much faith and time in their enterprising youngsters.”

Enterprise recognition for Hull Youth Enterprise and Hull Training from Warwick University

Hull City Councils Youth Enterprise department have been an associate of Warwick Universities CEI for a number of years and expressed the wish some time ago to be assessed as an enterprising and innovative organisation, alongside a CEI award program which is currently being carried out for apprenticeships and primary and secondary schools as part of the City enterprise education agenda. After the visit from two assessors from Warwick University, Youth Enterprise were able to demonstrate the enterprise competence of a local authority department, showing that the public sector can be as enterprising as business.

The recommendation of the assessor is that Youth Enterprise section of Regeneration and Partnerships at Hull City Council will now receive the CEI award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise, therefore the only local authority in the country to get it and that Hull Training will get the Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise for its Signmaking Apprenticeship Programme.

Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership Patron, Ruth Badger said

Ruth Badger

“I am delighted that the Department for Youth Enterprise within Regeneration and Partnerships and Hull Training at Hull City Council have been awarded these prestigious awards. Out of all the City’s in the UK this proves how hard Hull works to improve the lives of the young people who live there. The dedication and passion the enterprise and apprenticeship partnerships have in developing young entrepreneurs and apprentices is not only to be admired but to be used as an example of how it should be done. Well done to all involved.”

Councillor Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration & Employment said

“Congratulations to the Youth Enterprise and Hull Training teams on this achievement; it really shows that being enterprising in the workplace is happening and this CEI Award acknowledges the fact. The City needs our young people to be enterprising either as apprentices or as entreprenurs, more so in the current climate than ever before, so the Youth Enterprise and apprenticeship support we have in place is crucial and it is important that they practice what they preach”

Craig Grewcock, Warwick University said

"The Department of Youth Enterprise in Hull City Council has been working with the Centre for Education and Industry at the University of Warwick for a number of years, successfully developing and encouraging enterprise education within city primary schools. In recent months it has further supported the University by piloting a new series of awards. Hull Training as part of Hull City Council has now successfully gained the CEI award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise in Apprenticeship Training for its well-regarded Signmaking apprenticeship programme. Additionally, the Department of Youth Enterprise has itself gained a second and overarching award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise. The process has involved detailed analysis of the organisations with the provision of supporting evidence, associated case studies and an action plan for future development.

The University is currently talking to the government Department for Business Innovation and Skills who have expressed a particular interest in this new process and will be illustrating the process using the work which has been done with Hull. It is also hoped that the innovation and enterprise awards will be extended to other apprenticeship programs within the City Youth Enterprise Department”

Advice for retailers by Simon Xing Smoothies

I was recently asked for business advice from someone that loved the simplicity of the menu at our high street shop. He’d just become manager at a coffee shop that also made sandwiches and was thinking of being more of a restaurant. What instantly sprang to mind was focus. After launching a smoothie bar and redefining ourselves as a healthy fast food outlet, i could say with 100% confidence, that every area of a business will benefit from focusing on making the fewest things you possibly can. If you can be known for doing one thing, that’s perfect.

Your training will be easier resulting in increased consistency. Less equipment will improve the ergonomics of space and reduce the amount of costly sq ft wasted on prep space or stock. You’ll know exactly who you are targeting. And in return, customers will know exactly what you sell. They’ll assume you’re the expert – which you must live up to.

If you try to be a coffee shop, sandwich shop and restaurant, the chances are your coffee won’t be as consistently good as a coffee shop. Your sandwiches won’t be as good as a sandwich shop etc. You don’t get, and keep, customers by accident.

By doing one thing you can go to extreme lengths to do it perfectly, to award winning standard – not cutting any corners. Then you need to do a good job of communicating that. Your shop should be a theater – a celebration of your product and the process that goes into making it.

Some good examples of food and drinks companies in York and Leeds are the espresso bars like Laynes, La Bottega Milanese, Spring Espresso, they’re even more focused than a coffee shop. Or York Hog Roast with the hot meat joints in the window.

A personal favourite is the Luxury Ice Cream Company in York. By focusing on Ice Cream they can go to the trouble of pasteurising their own cream. With seating, the place is very popular year round, even though the core product is very seasonal. It’s a beautiful shop that celebrates ice cream and understands exactly who their target market is,

It takes balls to say ‘we only sell ……….’. But having a bigger menu doesn’t = more customers. Do your research first as to what product will be most appropriate for the location. Unlike the internet or market stalls and street food vans, location can’t be changed once you’ve signed that lease.

Decide what your perfect customer looks, and behaves, like. Plan carefully your complimentary products for changes in the seasons. Then jump in with both feet. As Steve Jobs famously presented, ‘focus is about saying no’. He knew a thing or two about business. And retail as it turned out.
