StartUp Britain Bus visits Hull

The Start-Up Britain Bus Tour 2012 ended its four week national tour in Hull in Queen Victoria Square on Friday 9th November in order to inspire and support young people who were interested in starting their own business. The 2012 Start-Up Britain Bus Tour was accompanied by Claire Young, BBC Apprentice star Hull Studio Enterprise Ambassador and Patron of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership. The event focused on employment, education and enterprise, and provided young people a chance to experience, educate and gain inspiration for their prospects in future employment and starting their own business.

Claire Young, Patron of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, said:

“As a city Hull, has an ambition to develop its entrepreneurial culture and support its enterprising young people.

“I was delighted that Start-Up Britain decided to support our local efforts and was pleased that so many young people came to the Bus in particular pupils from Malet Lambert School, as there is no doubt Hull is an enterprising place and has everything in place to support its young people to become the entrepreneurs of the future"

“The Bus presence within the city provided a focal point of interest to ensure young people get the best advice to find their own tailored start up support, it was good that the Humber Start up Loans scheme was launched at the same time and so many business mentors attended to support the young people, we look forward to future tours."

Young entrepreneurs face the badger

Events in Hull are underway for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012 and young people are gearing up to pitch their business idea to former Apprentice star Ruth Badger.

Young people from across the city entered the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge under three different categories. The winners from the primary school section were Victoria Dock primary School and their stationary business, the winers of  the secondary section were T-Dye from Newland School for Girls secondary school and Loui Fowler from Malet Lambert School with his sporting banner idea.16-24 year old sections will now go on to pitch their idea for the chance to win their share of £5000.

All the entrants had to present their idea to the first judging panel, made up of people from the public, private and community sectors. There were some fantastic entries, and many of them walked away with vouchers and  or sponsorship deals including Sweet as Pie who are providing 4 cakes for Awards and Celebration evening one of which is for the Lord Mayor of Hull

Ruth Badger said:

"I love visiting Hull as it is an enterprising city and I really enjoy sharing my journey with budding young entrepreneurs who really want to make a difference in the business world and undertaking the final judging for the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge.

“I have very high hopes that this year’s shortlisted entries are as good as previous years."

The competition had over 1,000 hits on the website www.hullbadgers.co.uk, which resulted in 75 enquiries, 37 entries and 16 projects that were shortlisted to 'pitch' to the judges.

“We had some fantastic business ideas from all the different age ranges and all the young people from primary school or looking to set up in business were very inspirational, there is no doubt in my mind that Hull is leading the way in nurturing future entrepreneurial talent and all the winners will sell their ideas in a clear and enterprising way to Ruth Badger in Global Entrepreneurship Week.”


The final judging panel will take place on Thursday the 16th of November and Ruth Badger will be joined by Phil Batty, Managing Director of Force-7, Alan Clements of Capability Mentors, Phil Benson of Xing,

Jamie Macaskill, Assistant Editor of Mail News & Media, Anna Millar of KC, Iain Bland of Paragon Data Services, Debbie Page of Claughtons and Danielle Welburn of Buildlife.

Malet Lambert first school in the country to meet new employability standard

Malet Lambert has become the first school in the country to become accredited with the Institute of Education Business Excellence's Business Read, the new employability standard for schools following their success of gaining the Enterprise in Education Standard last year ( The first secondary school to do so in Humberside)

With more than one million 16-24 year-olds out of work, the provision of high quality employability learning for all young people has never been more important. When properly embedded across the curriculum, it helps provide them with a greater opportunity for successful transition from education to employment. Being Business Ready means schools relationships with businesses can have greater impact on young people's learning and employability, making this transition as smooth and effective as possible in preparing students for the next stage of their education or training.

In securing the award, the school was praised by the assessment team for its 'strategic approach to employability', with strong leadership by the governing body and Headteacher. This approach, according to the assessor combined with a 'meticulous approach to planning and delivery', ensured a wide range of activities and events with as many students as possible could be undertaken.

Speaking about their success, Jane Disbrey, Headteacher said:

Bagpacking to support Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012

Hull Students from Andrew Marvell College, Malet Lambert School and Victoria Dock Primary school came together on Saturday 6th October to bag pack at ASDA, Mount Pleasant. The students helped to raise just under £500 in just four hours. The week of events costs a considerable amount of money and that is why the students who benefit so greatly from the event wanted to help and show how much they value the week by helping to raise the money.




Ruth Badger former BBC Apprentice and International Business Guru supports the whole week of activities and said;

Hull’s young talent show just how enterprising they are

Students from Andrew Marvell College, Malet Lambert School and Victoria Dock Primary school are coming together this Saturday to bag pack at ASDA, Hessle Road. The students will be aiming to raise as much money as they can to help fund what is important to them. That being - Global Entrepreneurship Week, which takes place week beginning November 12th. Every year this huge prestigious event with the support of Hull City council and the local business community takes place to help our young talents unleash their enterprise ideas. The week of events costs a considerable amount of money and that is why the students who benefit so greatly from the event wanted to help and show how much they value the week by helping to raise the money.

More Hull Primary Schools achieve National Standard for Enterprise Education

Maybury Primary, Clifton Primary and St James Primary schools have successfully been assessed by Warwick University on their fantastic enterprise activity within the schools; they have now become the latest Hull Primary’s to achieve the National Standard for Enterprise Education as part of the city’s award winning Hull Ready - £5 Blossom enterprise scheme. The award of the National Standard recognises the schools commitment to embedding enterprise into their curriculum and celebrates the various activities and enterprise challenges that pupils are involved in.

With these three schools achieving the award it takes it up to 17 primary schools and Malet Lambert school achieving it in Hull and over 50 are involved with Hull Ready working with many small businesses, the programme has two main sponsors in St Stephen’s and the Co-operative.

Councillor Helene O’Mullane Portfolio Holder Children's Services said,

" By embedding enterprise skills into the primary curriculum, pupils, teachers and business professionals have come together to form ground-breaking partnerships, at the Council we are very proud of our partnership with Rotherham and Warwick University which supports our enterprising primary schools which again has led to two more of our primary schools receiving the National Standard for Enterprise Education award which recognises the children's effort and hard work in those schools supported by enterprising teachers. Children as young as four have been introduced to the concepts behind running a business through Hull Ready “

"The Warwick assessor visited all 3 schools in the same week and in each instance was immensely and increasingly impressed with the ability and enthusiasm of each school Enterprise education coordinator as well as the commitment of Heads and Deputy Heads. All 3 schools stressed the importance they saw in introducing their children to enterprise skills - for example team work, communication, leadership, decision making or problem solving - which would help them in their future study and working lives; something which the pupils themselves were more than capable of explaining to the assessor!"

“Clifton had a strong submission including several sections of the audit likely to serve as future exemplars for other schools as to completion of good practice; there was also a well planned and managed range of enterprise activities in the school. St James have a committed head teacher who led on the submission on behalf of the School supported by enthusiastic staff at the school, the level of enthusiasm for enterprise activity demonstrated by pupils during the assessment indicated the fantastic impact it was having on their learning and at Maybury there is a strong enterprise coordinator and senior staff have also received some enterprise training. There are good external partnerships and budget allocations for enterprise groups are available.”

Chair of Enterprise Education Practioners Group

In order to ensure that Hull meets the challenges set in its Enterprise Charter, Hull's most enterprising teacher 2011 Stephen Logan Business Champion at Malet Lambert School has accepted the role as Chair of the enterprise education practitioners group which will act as a sub group of the Hull Youth enterprise Partnership.

The aim of the group is to support teachers and tutors across all curriculum phases and to ensure that young people have the support to develop their enterprising ideas in schools and colleges in the City. The group also aims to establish and train an enterprise champion in every school, college, training provider and organisation that works with young people as well as to highlight enterprise as a progression pathway for young people by enabling them to be aware of opportunities across Europe
