Fourth Year Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge

The Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge will take place again this year. The Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge is open to young people aged 24 or under, and has three age ranges - Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Post 16 - individuals or groups may apply. Candidates must be living in Hull or the East Riding and have an enterprising idea such as a new business idea, a co-operative, a community enterprise project or an enterprising school/college project. The deadline for entries is 1st October 2014. The winners of each section will get the opportunity to pitch at Global Entrepreneurship Week to double their winnings against a panel chaired by Ruth Badger

Prize money for the winners of each section is as follows:

Primary School section up to £500
Secondary School section up to £750
Post 16 - Business idea for 16 - 24 year olds up to £1500

“I was really pleased to win the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge 2012 with my idea of a retractable sports banner, it has encouraged me to take my idea further and I now have had my sports banners designed and manufactured in China. I have since held meetings with Hull FC who agreed to purchase some of the banners for sale in the official club shop and I have sold a number of them at matches. I am in the process of marketing the concept to other professional clubs as well as looking at developing one for school pupils, there is no doubt without the support of Ruth I would not have got as far as I have with my business idea”

Youth Enterprise Summit - June 6th 2013

On 6th June 2013, as part of Humber Business Week, Hull hosted the first youth enterprise summit in Yorkshire supported by international business guru and former BBC Apprentice Star Ruth Badger as well as young entrepreneurs in Hull at Malet Lambert School in order to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Hull’s contribution to the youth enterprise agenda. The event saw school based businesses, The Green Queens, who have developed primary support materials relating to the environment, and Loui Fowler of Triple R Banners, who has designed a range of sport fans hand held banners outline their enterprise journey. Also speaking was Oliver Wilson Managing Director of Xuro and currently an apprentice working with CityWorks, Hull City Council and Malet Lambert School helping the organisations to embed enterprise within their work with young people.

The event saw delegates coming together from all over Yorkshire as well as from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills to find out what support is available for young entrepreneurs in the area, ranging from start up advice, start up loans and start up grants and their own network of young entrepreneurs and how it is committed to developing the entrepreneurial culture at an early age by showcasing the partnership support for a number of enterprising pupils at Malet Lambert.

The Youth Enterprise Summit also held a question and answer session with the following on the panel Chaired by Ruth Badger, Sean Royce Finance and Commercial Director KC, John Gilbert Managing Director of eskimosoup &former pupil Malet Lambert, William Oxley Director Youth Enterprise Services, Nic Dakin MP and young entrepreneurs Loui Fowler of Triple R Banners and Ellie Taylor The Green Queens

The event also saw the launch of Hull’s Young Entrepreneur Start up Guide, developed in partnership with Enterprise Nation and a new patron scheme for the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank presented by Anna Millar of KC and Judy Ward of Really Worx, which was established over 10 years ago and has allocated £265,000 to over 300 of the City’s enterprising young people. The event also saw the launch of the 10th Anniversary of Hull’s contribution to Global Entrepreneurship Week Brochure and Ross Bennett of Engaging Director launched the city’s new enterprise education website. Over 500 tweets from 30 different tweeters were issued at the event using the hashtag #YES13

New Hull Start-Up Kit - Young Entrepreneurs

On 6th June 2013, young entrepreneurs in Hull will have yet another tool to support them in starting a small business. The Hull Start-Up Kit is a comprehensive guide to starting a business in Hull for young people, with case studies, details of support services and funding streams available in the city.

The 170 page book has been backed by Hull City Council, Malet Lambert School , and KC, and contains quotes from BBC Apprentice stars Ruth Badger and Claire Young. Also supported by the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, who will be announcing big changes in the coming weeks, young people applying for grants through the bank will have the opportunity to use the Hull Start-Up Kit through their first steps into entrepreneurialism.

The Hull Start-Up Kit also includes £500 worth of offers from Enterprise Nation partners.The Hull Start-Up Kit will be released during the Youth Enterprise Summit as part of Biz Week 2013 which will see 165 delegates at Malet Lambert School hear about the city’s successes.

Oliver Wilson, 19, co-chair of Let’s Talk Business, Managing Director of Xuro Limited, co-created the Hull Start-Up Kit with Enterprise Nation. He said:

“I went out to interview a number of young people who had been supported by the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, Start-Up Loans and Let’s Talk Business for case studies. It was great to hear how they were getting on.

“In my opinion, Hull is home to some of the most enterprising young people in the country. It is such a great opportunity for our city’s young people to be able to tell their story.”

12 young entrepreneurs, aged as young as 14, feature in the Hull Start-Up Kit telling the story of when they started up, what support they received and where they are today.

The deadline for the completed full entry forms will be 1st September 2013 and judging will be completed by 15th September 2013. The winners will be invited to receive their award at the Celebration Event we hold in Global Entrepreneurship Week on November 22nd at Staff House at the University of Hull. The winning schools will receive an engraved plaque and £200 to further develop enterprise activity.

Enterprise recognition for Hull Youth Enterprise and Hull Training from Warwick University

Hull City Councils Youth Enterprise department have been an associate of Warwick Universities CEI for a number of years and expressed the wish some time ago to be assessed as an enterprising and innovative organisation, alongside a CEI award program which is currently being carried out for apprenticeships and primary and secondary schools as part of the City enterprise education agenda. After the visit from two assessors from Warwick University, Youth Enterprise were able to demonstrate the enterprise competence of a local authority department, showing that the public sector can be as enterprising as business.

The recommendation of the assessor is that Youth Enterprise section of Regeneration and Partnerships at Hull City Council will now receive the CEI award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise, therefore the only local authority in the country to get it and that Hull Training will get the Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise for its Signmaking Apprenticeship Programme.

Hull Training as part of Hull City Council has now successfully gained the CEI award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise in Apprenticeship Training for its well-regarded Signmaking apprenticeship programme. Additionally, the Department of Youth Enterprise has itself gained a second and overarching award for Organisational Innovation and Business Enterprise. The process has involved detailed analysis of the organisations with the provision of supporting evidence, associated case studies and an action plan for future development.

The University is currently talking to the government Department for Business Innovation and Skills who have expressed a particular interest in this new process and will be illustrating the process using the work which has been done with Hull. It is also hoped that the innovation and enterprise awards will be extended to other apprenticeship programs within the City Youth Enterprise Department”
