Young entrepreneur launches hair raising business
A nineteen year old entrepreneur has launched a business that will provide specialist support to those suffering hair loss as a result of cancer treatment or conditions such as alopecia.
Amy Taylor from Keyingham first came up with the idea for her business, Hair by Amy, X months ago. Amy is a fully qualified hairdresser and has been working in salons for four years and in that time has supported a number of cancer patients. She saw a gap in the market for business offering bespoke services to those in need of wigs.
Amy’s business will provide a range of services including sourcing and styling of wigs, supporting her customers when their hair grows back and providing general hairdressing services.
“I’ve seen family and friends go through cancer treatment and lose their hair. By speaking to them and by doing my own research I’ve found that for a lot of people who are losing their hair, going to a normal salon isn’t a great experience for them. Those that do offer private consultations are really expensive. I want to put my customers at ease and make them feel comfortable and where better to do that than in their own home.
“With the grant from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank I am now able to fulfil my dreams and set up my business. The support they continue to give me has been fantastic and I would recommend that other young people who have a business idea to speak to them.”
The bank is funded through a range of donations from entrepreneurs, together with the City Council’s Hull Training. It is also closely linked to the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, which aims to encourage young people to become more enterprising and contribute to Hull City Council's target of creating 1,200 new businesses. The bank's funding last year received a funding boost from KC, which has donated £60,000 to the bank over three years.

She is a determined and thoughtful young lady that has not only developed a great business plan, but she is giving a fantastic service to a group of people in our community when they need it most. I wish Amy the best of luck with her business.”
As well as financial support, Amy will undertake the International Association of Bookkeepers Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounting for Business QCF offered by Golding Computer Services Ltd.

Support Hull's Global Entreprenurship Week - Call to arms
Following on from yet another highly successful Business Week in Hull & the Humber.
Plans are already in place for the next celebration of enterprise in the area, Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012. that with the backing of Hull and East Riding’s business community will take place from the 12th – 16th November in order to support a celebration of enterprise for Hull and East Riding schools and colleges. The week will feature five major conferences in the city for young people aged 9 to 21 as they learn about the world of enterprise, as well as an Awards evening.
Organisers are looking for more sponsors and supporters for the Week current sponsors are the Co-operative, Hull City Council, St Stephen’s, Hull Training, Arco, Insurance Partnership, CityWorks, Hull College, University of Hull, Neil Hudgell Solicitors, Malet Lambert School, KC, Hull College Studio School, Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, Andrew Marvell College, Victoria Dock Primary School, Jenko, Force-7, GH Events, Blair Jacobs, Thomas Arran Photography, Amanda’s Blue Orchid, Garbera Enterprises, Xing Education, the Institute of Directors, Mail News and Media and John Meehan.
The week will also see the final of the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge www.hullbadgers.co.uk in which the winners of the three sections of Primary, Secondary and Post 16, get the opportunity to double the investment in their enterprising idea from earlier rounds by showing how enterprising they are to Ruth Badger herself and a panel of business leaders. Claire Young has also kindly offered to spend a day during that week in one of your Primary schools to help and support the children in planning a school prom.

Budding Hull entrepreneurs are being urged to make the most of a new fund aimed at helping them set up their own business
The new national StartUp Loans scheme was launched recently and Hull business leaders and members of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership are keen to see local young people take full advantage.
The scheme will offer finance and support to entrepreneurs, aged 18-24, in a bid to kick-start more businesses and tackle youth unemployment. Applicants will receive advice and guidance, with the most promising going on to receive formal mentoring and training, including help with developing a business plan. Those with “robust and approved” plans will then be eligible for loans of around £2,500.
In Hull and the East Riding it will complement the work of the city’s Youth Enterprise Bank that gives grants of up to £1,000 to young people aged 21 and under that live in Hull and the East riding.
“The support and advice available through this scheme could help local young entrepreneurs turn an idea and a proposal into a real business. We would urge young people to find out more and look to secure valuable funds working alongside the city’s Youth Enterprise Bank that could help get their business off the ground.”

As with other initiatives such as the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank , which is also available to young people in Hull and the East Riding young , people can pick up support in a variety of ways including help in putting together a business plan right through to receiving a loan to set up the business."
The maximum repayment terms on offer with the loans will be five years, while the interest rate will be set at the Retail Price Index (RPI) plus 3%. All repayments and interest will be channelled back into a central pot to support other young entrepreneurs.

Solicitors Help Promote Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012
During the week there will be a range of activities to give local entrepreneurs the chance to showcase their projects, meet other like-minded inspirational individuals and generally raise the profile of entrepreneurship across the city. Activities range from enterprise competitions to talks from local role models to large scale conferences. High-profile speakers at this year’s event include former candidates from BBC1’s The Apprentice Ruth Badger and Claire Young.
Hull Global Entrepreneurship Week – part of an international initiative to promote inspirational business leaders – is organised by The Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership which supports and encourages young people aged 8-25 to become more enterprising. The partnership helps young people to overcome economic and social barriers that deny them the opportunity of economic inclusion, progression and choice, enabling them to reach their full potential in the world of employment.

More Hull Primary Schools achieve National Standard for Enterprise Education
Priory Primary and Paisley Primary schools have successfully been assessed by Warwick University on their fantastic enterprise activity within the schools; they have now become the latest Hull Primary’s to achieve the National Standard for Enterprise Education. The award of the National Standard recognises the schools commitment to embedding enterprise into their curriculum and celebrates the various activities and enterprise challenges that pupils are involved in.
With these two schools achieving the award it takes it up to 14 primary schools and Malet Lambert school achieving it in Hull.
Craig Grewcock, The University of Warwick assessor, said
“Paisley Primary had a strong submission including several sections of the audit likely to serve as future exemplars for other schools as to completion of good practice; there was also a well planned and managed range of enterprise activities in the school. Priory Primary have a committed head teacher supported by a knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic enterprise coordinator, the level of enthusiasm for enterprise activity demonstrated by pupils during the assessment indicated the fantastic impact it was having on their learning”
Paisley teacher & enterprise champion Allison Stabler said,
"Paisley are very proud to receive the National Standard for Enterprise Education award as it recognises the children's effort and hard work. Being involved in projects such as the regeneration of the Pulman Street playground, singing in local residential homes for the elderly and honouring Hull's lost trawler men through creative art shows an enterprising commitment to the community. The award is very special as every child; from our youngest 3 year olds to our mature year 6 pupils have contributed to achieving this National Standard."
