Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2017

Nominations are now open for Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2017 that recognise Hull's enterprising schools and businesses. The awards recognise Hull's enterprising schools and businesses and are organised by Hull City Council in partnership with the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank.

The awards are sponsored by local businesses and organisations from across the city. This year's award winners will be announced in Global Entrepreneurship in November.

Winners will be invited to receive their award at the celebration event on Friday 17 November at Craven Park as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. The winning schools will receive an engraved plaque and £200 to further develop enterprise activity.

“I particularly welcome the two new awards in the memories of the late Maxwell Bird and Gordon Wilson, two champions of young people in the city that sadly passed away this year.”

Last year Ross Bennett was honoured with The Sheila Waudby Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, he said: "For five years my educational services business has had support from the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and its many partners. I am very proud to be associated with them, especially during Global Entrepreneurship Week and as a member of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank management committee."

Make £5 Blossom - Round 14

Hull City Council’s Make £5 Blossom project will be holding its 14th end celebration event sponsored by the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank at the Guildhall on April 26^th the and will see primary and secondary school pupils, sharing their enterprising journeys of how they used a loan they received from their business partners to hopefully make a profit. The only boundaries set for the young people was that their ideas would need to have an element of involving the promotion of Hull as the City of Culture, other than that they could be as enterprising as they wanted. The pupils at Craven Primary Academy produced Hull themed badges working with KCOM’s Community Manager Brendon Smurthwaite, whilst Wansbeck Primary held a musical evening, a number of the enterprising pupils held Christmas and Easer Fairs whilst Gillshill Primary designed and created Hull themed shopping bags.

Each group of young people were given a loan of £150 in November 2015 as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week from their business partner and have had to show their entrepreneurial spirit whilst using the Big 13 Enterprise Skills to hopefully make a profit, this will then be shared between our enterprising young people, our charity of the year Action Duchenne www.actionduchenne.org which is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (around 2500 people have DMD in the UK) and the Be Enterprising Group of practitioners.

Involvement in this round has included Mersey Primary/ Estcourt Primaries with AB Rooms, Woodlands Primary with  AA Global, Tweendykes with Netopian, Griffin Primary with Inspireignite, Wansbeck with Daniel Barker Music,St Marys College with Swift Group, Biggin Hill Primary with St Stephen’s Shopping Centre, Buckingham Prmary with  Pepperell’s Solicitors, Gillshill Primary with Active Humber, Francis Askew Primary and Courage Queen,Priory Primary and 360 Accountants and Craven Primary Academy with KCOM.

In the previous rounds schools in Hull have worked with over 120 different businesses and the pupils have made £1000’s in profit and over 4000 pupils have been involved.

#THUDYorkshire From South Africa to Hull

On 20^thJanuary 2017 at Furley & Co from 5.30pm till 8.30pm as part of 2017 Hull City of Culture Celebrations and to mark the official launch of The Hook-Up Dinner Yorkshire (an international networking group founded in South Africa) for young entrepreneurs. The Hull based young entrepreneurs Thomas Arran and Kit Hargreaves have brought the concept of the Hook up Dinner to Hull from South Africa after they visited South Africa last year to meet young entrepreneurs and will act as joint Chairs of #THUDYorkshire

The first event will be attended by young entrepreneurs from Hull and North Yorkshire as well as Selebogo Molefe CEO - Lifesgud Global Investments (Pty) Ltd founder of Hook up Dinner movement who will talking about the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in South Africa and the similarities with Hull and the coordinator of the HOOK up Dinner in Zimbabwe Constantine Nyanzero, who will be speaking about Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Zimbabwe.

#THUDYorkshire is a new initiative that brings the passion, dedication and hugely successful model of the Hook Up Dinner to young people in the UK. It began after a trip to South Africa by young entrepreneurs. While they were there, the young people saw how even thousands of miles away, the same issues were faced by young enterprising people there as in the UK. As a result on their return, they decided to set up a similar initiative in Hull and Yorkshire. #THUDYorkshire will be holding monthly meetings to encourage discussion and facilitate connections between young people to help everyone grow

#MicroBizMattersDay on Friday 13th January

KCOM, Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and Hull City Council will be taking part in the third annual #MicroBizMattersDay on Friday 13^th  January to celebrate the contribution made by micro businesses to the UK economy. #MicroBizMattersDay takes place everywhere in the world and any which way anyone chooses. January 13th is about at least 13 minutes of actions – online and offline – on the ground, in the air and on the sea. There are no rules and borders in enterprise.

As part of the day, micro businesses across the UK are being encouraged to give 13 minutes of their time to support to other micro businesses, and in Hull the JCYEB in partnership  with KCOM has agreed to host an event in Hull

The video will be used on the day as part of the Enterprising Young People hour where the city's young entrepreneurs will be giving one minute tips to aspiring young people on youth entrepreneurship and the Big 13 Enterprise Skills.

"In a nutshell it's not always about high growth and expansion for young people, it's about enjoying what they are doing and many are wanting to put back into their community, not because it's the trendy thing to do but because it's the right thing to do and for that reason I am pleased that so many young people are making a contribution to #MicroBizMattersDay." 

Further Information

1.      Although, most countries are seeing record numbers of self-employed and micro enterprise owners (in the UK, for example 95% of all businesses are micro enterprise – 5 million) it is getting tougher to earn a reasonable living. In many countries the behaviour of national, regional and local government, alongside some large organisations, makes it an uphill struggle. (In the UK 1 in 7 of the workforce are self-employed but are earning 20% less than in 2008).

2.     The annual, global #MicroBizMattersDay shows the world the massive contribution independent business owners and the self-employed make to the global economy, job creation and community. We call this combined power of micro enterprise owners the #PowerOfPlenty. #MicroBizMattersDay of actions is primarily for these people – the #PowerOfPlenty. But on #MicroBizMattersDay everyone can play and do something to support micro enterprise.

3.     Since January 9th 2012 the free-to-join-in Enterprise Rockers (@MicroBizMatters) movement has been building the #PowerOfPlenty. British co-founders and co-funders of the Enterprise Rockers, Tina and Tony, along with Band Promoters (individuals) and Friends of the Rockers (organisations with networks of micro enterprise owners) have been increasing their reach around the world, through social media.The Enterprise Rockers movement has achieved a great deal to make life better for micro enterprise owners but much more can be achieved by hundreds of thousands of people, millions potentially, giving thirteen minutes of positive, helpful actions on January 13th 2017

4.     January 13th 2016 is the third, global, annual #MicroBizMattersDay of actions. Everyone is asked to give at least 13 minutes, day or night, to make life better for micro enterprise (0-9 employees) owners everywhere.

Young people in Ryedale supported by John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank

Having supported many 100's of young people to date in Hull and the East Riding, the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank (JCYEB) www.youthenterprise.co.uk is pleased to be working in Ryedale and on its meeting on 6th December it supported three young people all of whom live in Norton on Derwent in Ryedale with a grant and access to a mentor, the three young people supported are Will Hodsman Summers for his new engineering business, Joe Foxton for his health and motivational awareness business and Ben Lawson for his cycle training and repair business.

The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank has allocated over £300,000 to 380 young people in Hull and East Riding and is now supporting young people in Malton, Norton-on-Derwent, Pickering in Ryedale and Scarborough and won the Enterprising Britain Competition 2015 and was a runner up in the European Enterprise Promotion Awards last November. The JCYEB offers more than just financial support, this initiative also offers practical advice to young people to help them get their business ideas off the ground.

The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank also has a Bondholder scheme http://www.jcyeb-bondholders.co.uk whereby local businesses in Ryedale can give donations to the scheme which has three options available ranging from £250 to £1000. The support generated from the scheme will support local young entrepreneurs and those that support the initiative will be recognised through various levels of publicity, demonstrating their commitment to young entrepreneurship and the local economy.

Global Entrepreneurship Week - Hull 2016

The ninth Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) takes place from 14 to 20 November and Hull will host five major events to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs in the city. 

GEW is the largest celebration of innovation and enterprise and will see entrepreneurs, researchers, investors and policymakers celebrate entrepreneurship across more than 160 countries. This year the themes focus on women, youth, investors, cities and scale-ups. During the week, 10 million people are expected to participate in one of the over 30,000 activities taking place. 

Hull City Council, in partnership with Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, have organised five major events to inspire, connect and engage the next generation of entrepreneurs in Hull. 

The city will host former BBC Apprentice stars Adam Corbally, Ruth Badger and Claire Young, Andy Pickles of Jive Bunny and Tidy Boys fame, and Antony Chesworth of EKM Systems, as well as young entrepreneurs Kit Hargreaves, Johnny Wootton and Louis Deane. Ross Bennett MD of Engaging Education will be the MC, and Hull's very own Gold Man will also be involved. 

Hull is putting its weight behind GEW in order to show how enterprising its young people are and throughout November the city will host over 40 events and activities relating to entrepreneurship across many of our schools and colleges.

Events in Hull 

Monday - The launch of Make £5 Blossom in the Guildhall with 14 schools from across the age range receiving loans of £150 from 14 businesses. Over a three month period the young people will undertake a range of activities and learn about the Big 13 Enterprise Skills. At the end of the period the profits will be split between the school, the Be Enterprising Group and Action Duchenne which is this year's charity. 

Tuesday - With the support of KC, international links will be the focus of the day and those involved in the youth enterprise agenda in Hull will be holding a Google Hangout with colleagues in South Africa via The Hook up Dinner based in Johannesburg. It will feature a number of young entrepreneurs including those who went to South Africa from the city in August. 

Wednesday - There will be a Post 16 Enterprise Masterclass with Ruth Badger and Antony Chesworth of EKM Systems heading up the judges, who will be examining the results of a group activity to come up with a new design and a marketing campaign for a new Caravan for the Swift Group. The judges will then decide who will walk off with a cash prize for best design and pitch. 

Thursday - The Secondary Enterprise Masterclass will take place which will see young people taking on the task of designing a new interactive classroom for the Sangwin Group and delivering a pitch to Adam Corbally (former BBC Apprentice) and colleagues, including Andy Pickles of Jive Bunny fame. 

Friday - Primary school pupils taking part in the "Hull Our City and the Mail at the Heart of it" event at the Guildhall will be developing a story relating to 10 great things about Hull for the Hull Daily Mail website alongside reporters and staff at Hull Daily Mail. Watching closely and available to support young people on the day will be senior executives of Hull Daily Mail, former BBC Apprentice star Claire Young and Andy Train, The Gold Man. 

Shortlist Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2016

Over 50 nominations for individuals and organisations have been submitted for the Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2016.

The awards are organised Hull City Council, in partnership with the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, and recognise how enterprising our Hull Schools and Businesses are. A panel has now shortlisted in each of the categories.

This year's awards winners will be announced in Global Entrepreneurship Week at the Guildhall in November.

1) The shortlisted nominations for most Enterprising School sponsored by RB are Gillshill Primary School, Malet Lambert, Oldfleet Primary School, Hull College and Ganton Special School.

2) The shortlisted nominations for the business that has done the most to promote a youth enterprise culture in the city, sponsored by John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank are, RB, Swift, Sangwin Group, Engaging Education and T Arran Photography.

3) The shortlisted nominations for The Sheila Waudby Young Entrepreneur of the Year award sponsored by Hull City Council are DJ Ben Rainey, Louise Upfold of Weasie Wears, Louis Deane of VISR VR, Ross Bennett of Engaging Education and Millie Notarantonio of Millie Rose. 

4) The shortlisted nominations for Most Enterprising Teacher sponsored by Sangwin Group are, Claire Smalley of Sirius Academy, Stephen Logan of Malet Lambert School, Chris Dawson of Gillshill Primary, Darren Storrer of Hull College and Zoe Stephenson of Gillshill Primary.

5) The shortlisted nominations for The Jane Disbrey Most Enterprising Student Award, sponsored by Swift are, Nathan Jones of St Mary's College, Harry Hopkins of Malet Lambert School and Harry Knight of Sirius Academy.

6) The shortlisted nominations for Best Newcomer school/Individual to Enterprise Education sponsored by Tech4Schools are Nikki Leslie of Mersey Primary School, Kat Middleton of Biggin Hill Primary School and Sarah Hamilton of Spring Cottage Primary School.

"It was a great honour last year to be announced as Hull's Most Enterprising Student of the Year and since then I have thoroughly enjoyed acting as an ambassador for youth enterprise in Hull.

"I am pleased to see that that this year over 50 individuals and organisations have received nominations and I look forward to the announcement of the well-deserved winners during in Global Entrepreneurship Week so they are recognised for the enterprising work they carry out across the city."
