Claire Young, BBC Apprentice star and businesswoman
“It is always a pleasure and a privilege to support Hull in the way it supports its enterprising young people, your city certainly believes in putting its energies behind its young people and not just paying lip service to enterprise. The work that partners are doing in your city is absolutely brilliant. I am pleased to see such a range of nominations that have been shortlisted in the different categories and I know it will be difficult to come to the eventual winners of each section."
Stephen Logan, Malet Lambert School Hull’s Most Enterprising Teacher 2011 said
"It was a great honour last year to be announced as the first recipient of the title of Hull’s Most Enterprising Teacher 2011 and I am pleased that this year there are so many nominations in each section clearly showing Hull as a city has real commitment through the Youth Enterprise Partnership and the business community to develop the enterprising skills of young people, it never ceases to amaze me how with the right support and encouragement our young people are truly enterprising and whilst not all will go on to be entrepreneurs of the future they certainly will be more enterprising in their outlook and in the workplace”
Hull has a partnership of over 60 organisations that have come to together to support Hull's enterprising young people and in November will celebrate this as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week

Hull welcomes application for Reality Energy Centre
A planning application has been submitted to Hull City Council for building the Reality Energy Centre in the Port of Hull, a £130 million development project producing 49 Mega Watts of 'green' electricity and bringing significant employment opportunities to the area. The application has been lodged by the project's developer, Real Ventures (Hull) Ltd.
The Centre will provide between 200 and 250 jobs during a 30 month long construction period and 35 long term, permanent posts during the plant's subsequent 25 year operational lifespan. Subject to planning permission being granted, work would begin on site early in the New Year. The plant will be fired by woody biomass fuel, imported by ship from sustainable sources directly to the Centre's three hectare site at King George Dock. It will conform to strict standards for controlling flue gas emissions and noise.
Councillor Steven Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration and Employment said: "The news that Real Ventures has submitted its planning application for its Biomass plant - a key milestone in the process - is a step forward and if approved will further reinforce Hull's position at the forefront of the low carbon economy.
"Hull is rapidly developing as both an offshore and green energy hub and we will offer all assistance to projects such as this to the mutual advantage of the company, the city and the wider region."

Call to support GEW 2012 in Hull
I would like to bring to the attention of Hull and East Riding’s business community the next celebration of enterprise in the area, Global Entrepreneurship Week. I hope that you will consider getting involved in this week that will take place from the 12th – 16th November in order to support a celebration of enterprise for Hull and East Riding schools and colleges as they host five major conferences in the city for young people, and a celebration evening that will feature young entrepreneurs from Hull along with Ruth Badger and Emma Walker Junior Apprentice semi finalist who are coming to Hull during the Week.
Increasing enterprise and creating a more dynamic business sector is central to an innovative, creative and competitive economy. Enterprise is a vital contributor to the health of our economy and to diversity of opportunity within our society. That is why I support your ambition to make your area the best place in the world to start and grow a business. As part of our ambition, I know the Humber is seeking to achieve a change in the perception of enterprise and entrepreneurship amongst its young people, ensuring that they have the information they need is an important tool in realising that change.
During the week I am looking forward to working with pupils and teachers at Gillshill Primary school on their enterprising idea and of course joining 200 young people from 15 primary schools who will be taking part in the “Hull Our City and the Mail at the heart of it” event at the University of Hull will be practising learning how planning, promotion and delivery are all essential qualities in running a successful business as they consider how they will handle an emerging news story . Watching closely and available to support young people on the day will be senior executives of Mail News and Media. The winning team will receive a special prize in vouchers courtesy of the Co-operative on of the major sponsors of the week.
Whilst I may not be from Hull, I feel at home in a City that does so much to support its enterprising young people through the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership. I am an ardent supporter of its work in particular during Global Entrepreneurship Week, which aims to create a more enterprising culture amongst young people. My hope is that today's young people go on to aspire to set up their own businesses, start social enterprises to improve their communities and be innovative employees themselves. Your area is doing a great deal to support their enterprising young person which makes me proud to be the Patron of the City’s Youth Enterprise Bank. If you want to know more about the week please consider booking a place on the launch breakfast that will take place on 21st September with Karl Turner MP and enterprising pupils from Victoria Dock primary school and Malet Lambert School.
If you want to see what happens during the week than please check out our YouTube site www.youtube.com/user/GEWHull2011 that features last years events and than contact Charles Cracknell via 01482 – 612983 or charles.cracknell@hullcc.gov.uk to discuss how you can get involved in this festival of enterprise.

Ofsted judges Hull Training as Good
Hull City Council's Hull Training and Adult Education teams were inspected in June and overall they were deemed to be delivering 'Good' provision with one element of the service noted as 'Outstanding'.
Tim Gardner and his inspection team spent five days with staff from the training service to judge how well the council is delivering training to its learners and supporting employers and partners in the city. During the time spent with Hull Training and Adult Education, inspectors found that the standard of work for learners and teaching, training and assessment is good. The consultation of views from learners', partners' and employers was particularly noted as 'Outstanding' by the Ofsted inspectors. These views are key in helping to develop and improve the training provision on offer.
Councillor Steven Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration and Employment, said:
"I am really pleased with the outcome of this inspection and it is good news that we are delivering high quality training provision for young people and adults in the area.
"I'm pleased about the emphasis which Ofsted have made upon the council's adaptability in meeting the needs of employers. Through meeting the needs of employers Hull Training and Adult Education are having a significant impact upon narrowing the skills gap in the city.
"We want to ensure that our learners have a good experience in our centres and this has been reflected in their feedback to Ofsted.
"It is now important that we look at the areas of improvement identified by the inspectors, learners and employers and make the necessary changes to give them an outstanding experience."
Roger Steadman, Electrical Engineering Manager for Omya UK said:
"Hull Training has been providing me with engineering apprentices for the past 10 years. On each occasion they have supplied very worthy young people who have fully integrated into the work environment, in addition to ensuring we have received apprentices who were perfectly matched for our engineering requirements. Hull Training give full support in all aspects of managing the learners for the whole apprenticeship term, from their basic skills, development, through to HNC standard."
Graham Billany, director from Team Humber Marine Alliance (THMA), said:
"Since its inception over 20 years ago, THMA and its members have had a strong working relationship with Hull Training. It has remained proactive and supportive to the training needs of the whole membership and has served us well with its professional and caring attitude towards all apprentices and developing managers."
Shaun Hairsine, IPT Leader for BAE, gave this feedback to Hull Training:
"I would like to put a note of thanks to your company on what I would say is some of the best training I have seen, since I have worked at BAE.
"The task was to bring three people up to speed with the basic welding skills and insight into NVQ level 2 for tig welding.
"Your involvement over the last three weeks to deliver and develop my operators has been nothing short of a miracle. In such a short period of time the three lads have now all submitted a final test peace into the labs for approval, which normally takes between 8 and 12 weeks.
"If this is the standard of training you constantly deliver I would have no hesitation in recommending you in the future for any more training required across the site."
Hull Training are the biggest provider of apprenticeships for Hull young people (16 - 19 years) with 900 apprentices enrolled with Hull Training last year.
For more information about courses available at Hull Training or through the Adult Education team visit www.hullcc.gov.uk or contact 01482 300 300.
