There have been over 40 nominations for individuals and organisations for Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2013 that are organised Hull City Council, in partnership with the John Cracknel Youth Enterprise Bank that recognise how enterprising our Hull Schools and Businesses are and this years awards winners will be announced in Global Entrepreneurship Week at the University of Hull in November at its 10th anniversary awards and Celebration Evening.

"It was a great honour last year to be announced as the recipient of the title of Hull’s Most Enterprising Teacher 2012 and that Malet Lambert was named as the City’s most enterprising secondary school. I am pleased that this year over 40 individuals and organisations have received nominations and I look forward to seeing the shortlist in September and the well deserved winners in Global Entrepreneurship Week so they can get recognition for the enterprising work they do in the City and continue to act as ambassadors for the City.

There is no doubt that Hull as a city has real commitment through the Youth Enterprise Partnership to develop the enterprising skills of young people, it never ceases to amaze me how with the right support and encouragement young people are truly enterprising and whilst not all will go on to be entrepreneurs of the future they certainly will be more enterprising in their outlook and in the workplace, I know it will be a difficult choice but all nominations are winners and true ambassadors of Hull and Humberside.

On behalf of Blair Jacobs Chair of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, I would like to invite you to a special event taking place during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013 ( which is in its 10th Year) that will involve some of the Hull primary schools that have been involved with the award winning Hull Ready project & Make £5 Blossom. Pupils from the schools will deliver presentations on how they utilised their £150 business loans for their projects and also showcase the ‘Big 13’ enterprise skills they used as part of the Make £5 Blossom scheme.

In the true spirit of Global Entrepreneurship Week the children will also set the adult audience a task by pupils from Victoria Dock primary School in order for you to show how enterprising you are. The event will take place on Tuesday 19th November 2013, in the Reception Rom and Banqueting Suite in the Guildhall Hull and will feature former BBC Apprentice and International Business Guru Ruth Badger (thanks to the sponsorship of St Stephens ) Along with Jim Harris Chair Hull BID and Centre Manager of St Stephen’s. It will be a morning event with registration between 9.15 am and 9.45am with a prompt start at 9.45 am to 1pm; lunch will be available at its conclusion. Loui Fowler - last day of work experience

On the last day of my Work Experience, I wanted to complete some of my own business work to be ahead and also start preparing for the holidays, but before this Mike had prepared a check list for me to complete. Which was to: finish off my letter to send to Hull FC, to choose 3 possible Icebreakers for GEW, finish off my blog, finish off my letter to send to all the Super League clubs, finish the project with Lee and finally send the final GEW Banner designs for Charles approval. I had quite a busy morning ahead of me, so I started it by finishing off the GEW designs for their own TRIPLE R Banner and sent them off to Charles. Then I began on my tick list of finishing off the two letters; which I also accomplished. I then was to finish my blog and make a start on the GEW Icebreakers. Half way through my Icebreaker document, Jon and Jamie (the owners of Yes Yes) was here for a meeting and Mike insisted I came along. The meeting for me was really good, as I’ve now got some great new ideas from Jon and Jamie but also they wanted to finish off my website, and make me a landline number for my business not only to make it look bigger, but also attracts more companies. So personally, I found the meeting very beneficial, and are looking forward for the meeting with Jon and Jamie and hopefully working with Yes Yes in the future. The meeting finish at roughly 1:15, so I quickly nipped out for my lunch to get back in time to finish of the last little bits Lee and I had to do for the GEW event. Unfortunately we didnt achieve what we wanted to on the last day but overall I believe we did pretty well for a week’s worth of work, and hopefully enough to give the GEW event a little more money. So after it all I went to back to the office, collected my belongings and ended a great week of Work Experience.

Day 4 Loui's Work Experience with Youth Enterprise

Day 4:- When arriving into the office the first thing I had to do was to start this Blog about what I’ve done over the week of my work experience. So I started with it so it could be published before 10 o’clock. At 9 Charles got me to go across to the Guildhall to go see his friend Mitch Upfold as he was going to get me some boxing tickets for Luke Campbell’s fight on the Saturday. So we went off to go see him to receive the tickets ( which I was grateful for), then we went to find one of Charles friends called Nathan Turner as had a very humorous and true conversation talking about my business and general things. Then as soon as we came back I was sent by Mike, to go deliver a cheque to Hullabaloon, which wasn’t very far just down the road. So when I got back I had to just finish off any of my own projects, which are the GEW banner design, My letter to Adam Pearson which all needed to be done and look for the Icebreakers for the GEW events. After I did this Lee turned up again to finish off any other sponsor money that we needed to collect as well as the raffle prizes which we were again very successful in as we received a Chinese Laundry T-shirt form Chinese Laundry, and we also received a £25 Lush beauty set for the bath to. We also started talking to the manager at Famous Memorabilia who was very willing to donate as he said that Enterprise is very close to his heart. So he said he would be willing to donate.

Loui Fowler - Work Experience Blog

Day 1 - When entering Kingston house I signed in and the came up to the Youth Enterprise office where I was greeted by Mike and Charles. After that I was shown around by Mike who showed me all of the fire exits and told me what precautions I had to take. When returning back to the office Charles had lined me up to attend a meeting with different sections of the Council and discussed the LEP and scrutiny which overall I found very boring and pointless. For me, I believed the meeting was not interesting but good for the experience. The meeting was very sophisticated and really I didn’t understand much of it. Subsequently, I went out for dinner and when I returned Lee Pearson from Malet was there who was attending to discuss a task that Mike had allowed Lee and I to do. The task was to try and earn more money for the GEW event in November. On that day Lee and I decided that the most efficient thing to do was to just go out onto the town streets and generally ask small businesses if they would like to sponsor any prises for the kids in GEW. On that day we wasn’t as successful as we wanted to be however, we did have many people interested, therefore we would follow this up on the following days.



Day 2 - On the second day I came in late due to having to attend a Vivergo Fuels meeting at the Saltend Chemical Park. Two other students and I were attending on behalf of Malet Lambert Students. When we get there we were met be Esther who told us what we were doing. We were handing out safety leaflets to the people getting onto the coach to travel up to the Vivergo fuels tent who were given a brief of what’s happening and how and where their money is going. After handing out the leaflets we travelled up to the tent and listened to the pitches and interviews that they had to offer. Personally I found it quite interesting but then started to bore me. The best thing was I actually understood what they were talking about due to the renewable energy project we did at school. After that I went to the Youth Enterprise office again where Mike has already had some tasks aligned up for me. The first one was to research another game / Icebreaker for the GEW events in November. I did think of some creative games however not all of them were suitable to play around a table. So we came up with the most creative and unusual games and just before the event in November I will be pitching them to the GEW organisers. After this I went to dinner and then was put up to another big task which was to clean up the store cupboard. That took me the rest of the afternoon in which I had been crushing boxes and also moving them so there was more space for more brochures.



Day 3 – On the third day I was set 1 task but then told that if I had some work for my business that I needed to be getting on with I should. The only task of the day must have been one of the worst as I had to clean 30 mugs for the Women’s Enterprise Meeting. It wasn’t bad that I had to wash the mugs; it was that in some of the mugs because they had been left so long there was mould on them. It was disgusting but my suspicion was that they all belonged to one person. Charles! So I got on with my tasks so they would be ready for the women to use at the meeting. I started at 9 and finished at 9:45. I actually took my time and tried not to think about the mould and finished 15 minutes before the meeting, which I was very pleased about. After that I got on with my business work and got on with the GEW designs, the Wigan Warriors designs and finally the Leeds Rhinos designs. From this for the GEW design as there was so many different colours I had to simple it down so they price would be less. So I tweaked the logo and tried to find out a price for them. Afterward, I went for dinner and arrived back just before Lee who was again helping me raise some more money for the GEW event. So we set off back the Brooks the shop that had told us to return when the manager had come back; so we did. Lee and I talked to the manager who was more than pleased to give something for the even so we received a £20 gift voucher for the Malet event. We was off to a god start. Then after being refused several times we thought we would go to Mad Dog Music who said they would give £20 for the event too. This is looking very good for the GEW event but even better we then went to The Uniform Shop who wanted to give the event £200 which Lee and I was very pleased with, and that was our day.

Fourth Year Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge

The Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge will take place again this year. The Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge is open to young people aged 24 or under, and has three age ranges - Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Post 16 - individuals or groups may apply. Candidates must be living in Hull or the East Riding and have an enterprising idea such as a new business idea, a co-operative, a community enterprise project or an enterprising school/college project. The deadline for entries is 1st October 2014. The winners of each section will get the opportunity to pitch at Global Entrepreneurship Week to double their winnings against a panel chaired by Ruth Badger

Prize money for the winners of each section is as follows:

Primary School section up to £500
Secondary School section up to £750
Post 16 - Business idea for 16 - 24 year olds up to £1500

“I was really pleased to win the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge 2012 with my idea of a retractable sports banner, it has encouraged me to take my idea further and I now have had my sports banners designed and manufactured in China. I have since held meetings with Hull FC who agreed to purchase some of the banners for sale in the official club shop and I have sold a number of them at matches. I am in the process of marketing the concept to other professional clubs as well as looking at developing one for school pupils, there is no doubt without the support of Ruth I would not have got as far as I have with my business idea”

Youth Enterprise Summit - June 6th 2013

On 6th June 2013, as part of Humber Business Week, Hull hosted the first youth enterprise summit in Yorkshire supported by international business guru and former BBC Apprentice Star Ruth Badger as well as young entrepreneurs in Hull at Malet Lambert School in order to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Hull’s contribution to the youth enterprise agenda. The event saw school based businesses, The Green Queens, who have developed primary support materials relating to the environment, and Loui Fowler of Triple R Banners, who has designed a range of sport fans hand held banners outline their enterprise journey. Also speaking was Oliver Wilson Managing Director of Xuro and currently an apprentice working with CityWorks, Hull City Council and Malet Lambert School helping the organisations to embed enterprise within their work with young people.

The event saw delegates coming together from all over Yorkshire as well as from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills to find out what support is available for young entrepreneurs in the area, ranging from start up advice, start up loans and start up grants and their own network of young entrepreneurs and how it is committed to developing the entrepreneurial culture at an early age by showcasing the partnership support for a number of enterprising pupils at Malet Lambert.

The Youth Enterprise Summit also held a question and answer session with the following on the panel Chaired by Ruth Badger, Sean Royce Finance and Commercial Director KC, John Gilbert Managing Director of eskimosoup &former pupil Malet Lambert, William Oxley Director Youth Enterprise Services, Nic Dakin MP and young entrepreneurs Loui Fowler of Triple R Banners and Ellie Taylor The Green Queens

The event also saw the launch of Hull’s Young Entrepreneur Start up Guide, developed in partnership with Enterprise Nation and a new patron scheme for the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank presented by Anna Millar of KC and Judy Ward of Really Worx, which was established over 10 years ago and has allocated £265,000 to over 300 of the City’s enterprising young people. The event also saw the launch of the 10th Anniversary of Hull’s contribution to Global Entrepreneurship Week Brochure and Ross Bennett of Engaging Director launched the city’s new enterprise education website. Over 500 tweets from 30 different tweeters were issued at the event using the hashtag #YES13
