John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank - April Funds

The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank supported by Hull based Telecommunications Company KC met to-day and gave grants to the following young people from Hull and East Riding


1. Tom Baron (19) was granted £500 for equipment and training on accounts for his photography business and will get a mentor from the Princes Trust




2. Thomas Arran (18) was granted £843.38 towards equipment for his photography business and will be invited to be official photographer for GEW 2012

3. The Green Queens a group of teenagers from Malet Lambert School were granted £1,000 for equipment will be mentored by Claughtons and Mike Notarantonio of Hull Ready

4. Luke Hills (18) was granted was granted £800 for a Cricket Coaching Business to be based at Brough they are receiving support from Hull College’s enterprise programme

5. Tawnie Marshall (20) was granted £500 for his Garden Maintenance for equipment and he will receive mentoring support from the Princes Trust

Thomas Arran said

"The grant will allow me to advance my business through both building a commercial and professional website and the ability to purchase new camera equipment that will enable me to improve my work and offer a greater range of services. The support from the Youth Enterprise Bank has been amazing and has provided me with the confidence to start and run my own business, the grant will only further allow me to build my confidence in running a business and provide the extra support needed"

Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge 2012

The Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge will take place again this year it will be officially launched in Hull later this month. The Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge is open to young people aged 24 or under, and has three age ranges - Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Post 16 - individuals or groups may apply.

Candidates must be living in Hull or the East Riding and have an enterprising idea such as a new business idea, a co-operative, a community enterprise project or an enterprising school/college project.

Prize money for the winners of each section is as follows:

Primary School section up to £500
Secondary School section up to £750
Post 16 - Business idea for 16 - 24 year olds up to £1500 ( If candidates enter this section they need to complete the attached business plan as well)

The winners of each section will get the opportunity to pitch at Global Entrepreneurship Week to double their winnings against a panel chaired by Ruth Badger. Enterprise Awards 2012

Hull Training in partnership with the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank are to sponsor a series of awards to recognise how enterprising Hull Schools are this years awards will be announced in Global Entrepreneurship Week at the University of Hull




1 Most enterprising Primary School in Hull
2 Most enterprising Secondary School in Hull
3 Most enterprising teacher in Hull
4 The business that has done the most to promote enterprise in a sustainable way in schools and or with a Post 16 provider
5 The individual business person that has done the most to support enterprise education
6  Special Enterprise Award

The deadline for the completed full entry forms will be 1st October 2012 and judging will be completed by 10th October 2011. The winners will be invited to receive their award at the Celebration Event we hold in Global Entrepreneurship Week on November 16th at Staff House at the University of Hull. The winner will receive an engraved plaque and £250 to further develop enterprise activity.

The Judges are the Patrons of Youth Enterprise in the City former BBC Apprentice stars Claire Young, Ruth Badger, Alan Johnson MP, Abhimanu Kudasamy the High Commissioner of Mauritius along with Hull’s Young Entrepreneurs of the Year in Amanda Hartley 2009, Dave Garbera 2010 and Bronwyn Wilson 2011.

Children make their £5 blossom - Round 7

Hull’s premier primary enterprise programme sponsored by KC, St Stephen’s Centre and the Co-operative Group Make £5 Blossom will be holding its 7th celebration event in April. 11 local Primary Schools will get the opportunity to showcase their business and enterprise skills when they gather for the Make £5 Blossom celebration event at The Guildhall on the 25th of April. Each of the schools involved have linked up with a range of local businesses that have provided support a £150 loan for the children to run their own mini business for the past few months. The range of ideas the children have come with have been fantastic with them having fashion shows, art galleries, scone and bun sales and children even running their own school discos and a French cafés.

Under this scheme, local businesses are being given the chance to invest in the future of young people. The project works through an initial investment of just £150 for a class of 30 pupils to encourage children to develop business plans, launch ideas and create products, all the time the project is running they get to you use an abundance of enterprising skills such as creativity, financial literacy and design and marketing.

KC for instance have linked with St Richards in East Hull the company provided the pupils with the financial loan and has supported the children throughout.

Malet Lambert School - Business Ready

Malet Lambert School in Hull is aiming to be one of the first in the country to become accredited with Business Ready™ – IEBE’s employability quality award.


As Stephen Logan, Business Champion at the school and Hull’s Enterprising Teacher of the Year 2011 explains, the decision to apply for the accreditation was a simple one, for both him and the school:

New Chair for Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership

The Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, which is an informal public/ private/community partnership set up to influence major partners in supporting Hull’s enterprising young people has appointed a new chair. The partnership is committed to the shared vision of growing the city’s economy for the benefit of young people and facilitating opportunities to widen the entrepreneurial spirit in the city. At a practical level, the Partnership supports and encourages young people in a variety of ways to develop their enterprising ideas and skills. After seven years of chairing the partnership Maureen Foers OBE Managing Director of Durban Limited has retired as Chair and the partnership has appointed Blair Jacobs well known BBC presenter and voice over artist, facilitator and corporate media skills trainer to take over the role with the addition of Hull Ready Project officer Michael Notarantonio and General manager of Humber EBP Sandra Cooper to act as Vice Chairs.

“I am pleased that the partnership has appointed Blair Jacobs to act as Chair, I felt that after seven years that it was time that the partnership which has successfully lobbied for support at a national and local level to support young entrepreneurs and to develop enterprise education in the city’s schools needed a new face at the top. Make £5 Blossom

The ‘Make £5 Blossom’ initiative, run by Hull Ready in partnership with Hull Training, begins its seventh round of activities on January 18th where schools and businesses will be invited to the Guildhall for the official launch. Participants will be introduced to each other and the all important business loan will be handed over to the children.

This round will see pupils from the schools given a £150 loan from a business partner - £5 for each pupil in the class. The teams will then develop an enterprising idea for the school or local community and ideally make a profit from their hard work. The children will work on their venture and their business partner will be on hand whenever possible to give advice & help them forward.

The duration for this round will be approximately 14 weeks and then the schools and businesses will be invited to an end celebration event at the Guildhall on the 26th of April, here the children will carry out presentations to share their enterprise journey and talk about all the new skills they have been using throughout the project.
