Hull awarded High Impact Badge of Honour for GEW 2011

As we approach the start of Global Entrepreneurship Week, Hull's events have met the High Impact Criteria set by Youth Business International who are running GEW 2011 in the UK for the second year running and we have had awarded the prestigious ‘High Impact Badge of Honour’. We are able to use the enclosed badge of honour which is certainly good news for Hull.

We are awarded this in order to maximise awareness of our high quality contribution to Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011, and they have invited us to place the Badge of Honour on our various websites

Lee Creamer Youth Enterprise Club

To-day saw the official setting up of a new youth enterprise club in Hull which is named after the late Lee Creamer of City Works who passed away a year ago, Lee was a supporter of the City’s enterprising young people as well as helping many young people in his varied job roles to back into work. The club will provide young people with a place to exchange skills, make contacts, share experiences, receive support and encouragement to work through their enterprising ideas. The Club early next year will also be looking to run workshops on helping young people set up in business as well.


All the young people who get involved in the Lee Creamer Youth Enterprise Club will also be able to apply for a grant from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank if they are aged 21 and under that live in Hull and the East Riding www.youthenterprise.co.uk . This club is part of the national network of Enterprise Clubs which along with the Enterprise Allowance (NEA) are two of the Get Britain Working measures introduced by Jobcentre Plus to support young people aged 21 and under who are out of work and are considering starting their own business or becoming self employed.

Hull’s Finalists for Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge

With just a week to go till Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011 young people in Hull have been gearing up to pitch their business ideas to former Apprentice star Ruth Badger. Young people from across the city entered the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge under four different categories and the winners will now go on to pitch their idea for the chance to win their share of £5000.


These are:

Under 11 section - two teams Tree Huggers Production from Griffin Primary and the Toast Bar from Longhill Primary in East Hull each won £250 investment for their enterprising ideas

The 11yr - 16yr section - The Green Queen’s and East Hull Urban Arts from Malet Lambert from East Hull each won £300 investment for their enterprising ideas

16yr - 18yr section Oliver Wilson and Andy Selby of Xuro Computers of East Hull won £500 investment for their business

19 yr - 21yr section Ethan Gibson Impression 11 of West Hull won £850 investment for his business

" Last year was the first for the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge and I was really impressed with the talent that Hull has and over the last year Sarah Longthorn and I have enjoyed supporting the winner in 2010 Bronwyn Wilson a truly enterprising young person and I have high hopes again of this years finalists.
I love been involved in supporting Hull’s enterprising young people, there is no doubt in my mind Hull is an enterprising city and I really enjoy sharing my journey with budding young entrepreneurs who really want to make a difference in the business world.”

“Last year when I was asked to be a judge I did not know what to expect, and I was amazed at the confidence and determination to succeed showed by the young people and am looking forward to judging this years finalists.


All the entrants had to present their idea to the first judging panel, made up of people from the public, private and community sectors. There were some fantastic entries, and many of them walked away  with vouchers from the Co-operative and sponsorship deals from Hull Training and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. The competition is organised by Hull Training in partnership with the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and HWS Hosting this year the competitions supporting website www.hullbadgers.co.uk had over 2,500 hits on the website www.hullbadgers.co.uk, which resulted in 78 enquiries, 36 entries and 16 projects that were shortlisted to 'pitch' to the judges.
The final judging panel will take place on Thursday 18 November at staff House at the University of Hull and Ruth Badger will be joined by Gerard Toplass MD Claughtons, Ruth Badger, Sarah Longthorn Founder of Wedgewelly, Richard Tuplin Institute of Directors, Phil Batty MD Force-7 and Andrew Peterson KC Head of Marketing & Propositions

Hull's Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge 11- 16 Year Olds

Former President of the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce Carolynn Burges Chief Executive at Language is Everything Ltd , Graham Henderson of GH Events , Josh Wilson Heista Fuels and Ian Barrs of Hull Training confirmed the overall winners of the 11-16 age group in the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge they are The Green Queen’s and East Hull Urban Arts from Malet Lambert School in East Hull each gaining an investment of £300 from the Badgers and the chance to double their money when they face Ruth Badger herself on Thursday 17th November in Global Entrepreneurship Week.

The Green Queen’s who are wanting to support primary schools to understand the environmental agenda also received support for their business idea from the C-operative and invited to apply to funds from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and the two members of East Hull Urban Arts gained 325 in Co-op Vouchers.

Both teams gained high comendations from the judges. Both teams scored exactly the same marks and had impressed the judges with their enthusiasm and business model

Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge 2011 11 to 16 Section

Badgers Sett Enterprise Judges to-day heard from three teams from Andrew Marvell Business Enterprise College all of which impressed the panel of Mally Welburn, Oliver Wilson of Xuro, Graham Jenkinson of Jenko, Bronwyn Wilson of Crazy Critter World, Tracey Dervey of City Works and Rachael Austin of Mail News and Media. All the entrants each received £20 in vouchers from the Co-operative.

At the same time each team has been invited either as a collective or in their individual groups to apply for funding from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank http://www.youthenterprise.co.uk/.

Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge under 11 Section

Today Neil Cavil of Npower, Peter Shipp of EYMS, Graham Henderson of GH Events, Cllr Chris Gurevitch judged the shortlisted schools for the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge under 11 Section, all four schools Griffin, Gillshill, Victoria Dock and Longhill did really well at showing how enterprising they are. In the end the judges nominated Tree Hugger Productions of Griffin Primary School who are looking to produce canvas draw bags with a green message and the Toast Bar from Longhill Primary School.

These two schools won £250 and will now get the chance to win another £250 towards their enterprising idea when they face Ruth Badger and her assistants in Global Entrepreneurship Week on November 17th 2011.
All the schools also received vouchers to support their idea from the Co-operative and or from I Love2Shop vouchers.

Global Entrepreneurship Week Logo for Hull 2012

A competition to design the logo for next year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull was decided  by Claire Young. There was nearly sixty entries entries had been received with a very high standard of submission.

The competition was won by young people from Malet Lambert Language College with Poppy the enterprising pony designed by Shauna Burnett and Dora the enterprising Dinosaur designed by Molly Butcher.
